This project transforms an existing house into a thoughtfully designed multi-unit dwelling, adding two additional units to the site while addressing the diverse privacy needs of its occupants. The occupancy brief reveals
a unique dynamic: two families who know each other occupy two of the units, while the third unit is a rental
intended for a family unfamiliar to the permanent residents. To balance privacy and community, the design strati昀椀es the site by height. The two permanent units are located primarily on the ground 昀氀oor, fostering a sense of
stability and connection to the shared outdoor spaces. Meanwhile, the rental unit is elevated, providing a more
private living experience for its occupants.
The units are connected by semi-private courtyards, which serve as shared spaces that encourage interaction
among residents while maintaining the autonomy of detached dwellings. A stroll garden weaves through the lot,
guiding residents toward a park located at the rear of the site. This green space not only enhances the site’s natural appeal but also o昀昀ers a safe play area for children, addressing the lack of walkable parks in the Mar Vista
neighborhood. This expansion creates a harmonious blend of privacy, community, and functionality, making it a
welcoming space for all its residents.
